Fargo: SE (RPKG/DVD)

Leave it to the wildly inventive Coen brothers (Joel directs, Ethan produces, they both write) to concoct a fiendishly clever kidnap caper that's simultaneously a comedy of errors, a Midwestern satire, a taut suspense thriller, and a violent tale of criminal misfortune. It all begins when a hapless car salesman (played to perfection by William H. Macy) ineptly orchestrates the kidnapping of his own wife. The plan goes horribly awry in the hands of bumbling bad guys Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare (one of them being described by a local girl as "kinda funny lookin'" and "not circumcised"), and the pregnant sheriff of Brainerd, Minnesota, (played exquisitely by Frances McDormand in an Oscar-winning role) is suddenly faced with a case of multiple murders. Her investigation is laced with offbeat observations about life in the rural hinterland of Minnesota and North Dakota, and Fargo embraces its local yokels with affectionate humor. At times shocking and hilarious, Fargo is utterly unique and distinctly American, bearing the unmistakable stamp of its inspired creators. --Jeff Shannon

Not a true story!

Not a true story!
I can’t tell if those people who are getting upset because this is a “true story” are being sarcastic. While there is a “based on a true story” statement in the beginning, if you watch the bonus interviews, you will learn that that statement is a lie. This was controversial several years ago. It was meant to poke fun at those other “based on a true story” stories that have too much creative license used. This movie is as true as Forest Gump. It’s so believable because it has pieces of many true stories mixed in with the fiction. The basic plot is that a car dealer comes up with a simple plan to get money from his rich father-in-law; have the wife kidnapped for a ransom to be paid by the father-in-law. The hired kidnappers would get a portion and he would keep the rest of the ransom. Of course, the plan did not work out as expected (there wouldn’t be much of a story if it had). This movie has a lot of dark humor in it. It’s not something you’d watch with your kids unless they are teenagers or older.

Jerry Lundergaard (William H. Macy) is obsessed with getting his grubby paws on his father-in-law's money. He's in "trouble" (what kind isn't explained, but my imagination tells me it's some kind of sleazy business or real estate deal. It's made clear later that Jerry faked VIN numbers on a GMAC loan to receive $320,000 - but GMAC is threatening to call back the money). He's so crazy to get money out of his father-in-law, Wade, that he hires two petty criminals to kidnap his own wife and split the ransom with them. This is just the opening to the movie, wait until it really gets going!

Jerry is a weasel; a sniveling, swindling, conniving, bumbling weasel, and the criminals he hires, Carl Showalter (played by the amazing Steve Buscemi) and Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare) are not very bright either. During the execution of the kidnapping, they wind out shooting three people in Brainard, a small town outside the Minneapolis area. Assigned to the murders is Brainard's pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson (Academy Award winning Frances McDormand). Marge, unused to such violence in her small town, is determined to find the killers.

I don't want to give too much away, I want you to be as shocked and entertained as I was when I watched 'Fargo' for the first time. The film moves quickly, and bodies keep unexpectedly dropping. There's never a dull moment. This spectacular Coen Brothers film has everything in it, suspense, comedy, blood, and horror. (It's usually classified as a Dark Comedy). The performances by William H. Macy, Frances McDormand, and Steve Buscemi are brilliant; the casting was perfect. A couple of hilarious scenes are Marge Gunderson interviewing two hookers, and the "Geez, I'm going crazy out there at the lake" story by Mr. Mohra to Officer Olson. You'll laugh out loud at these. Jerry's fumbling, greedy attempts to get money (This is MY deal here, Wade) are a riot, and his temper tantrums when he fails are not to be missed. (William H. Macy should have won the award he was nominated for)

I was finally spurred into writing a review of this, one of my favorite movies, when the Special Edition DVD came out. In the Special Edition you have:
*A Documentary called Minnesota Nice (what Frances McDormand punned the dialect used in the film), which is interviews with the Coen Brothers and actors Peter Stormare, Steve Buscemi, Frances McDormand, and William H. Macy. It also answers once and for all the question of whether or not the movie really is based on a true story.
*An Audio Commentary of the film by Cinematographer Roger Deakins. He's not very loquacious, and speaks in a monotone - often muttering - but has interesting details of the locations (most of the movie was filmed on location rather than using studio sets), lighting, camera angles, etc. It's unfortunate he doesn't have much to say about the actors performances though. He also talks way too much about other movies he's filmed rather than focusing specifically on 'Fargo'.
*A Trivia Tract. Interesting little windows of information during the film, everything from the actor's previous films to the history of McDonald's restaurants.
*A segment of The Charlie Rose show where he interviews Ethan and Joel Coen, and Frances McDormand.
    *Theatrical and TV trailers.

The Special Edition DVD is worth the price, I recommend purchasing it even if you already own a previously released copy of the film. If you haven't seen the movie yet, then run right out and buy a copy right now. I highly recommend this movie, definitely worth a purchase. 10 Stars. Enjoy!

Considering the current state of Fox (Disney owned) I would not recommend buying any physical release from them or similar big studios
unless its a pre-Disney acquisition much like their 2011ish release of One Hour Photo. It's clear they are putting out lukewarm bluray and 4k bc they want ppl paying for the Disney+ app to fund those horrible MCU/Star Wars affairs. And considering its now one year since Shout announced their 4k release and still no updates on a release date this almost ten year old release is a a great buy(this is not just a bluff from Shout as they hold a physical release deal with MGM studio titles of which Fargo was originally produced as). Mid 2010s era 20th Century Fox and MGM Blu rays were strong releases with ridiculously high average bitrates(this one is steady at 31mbps picture compression and 3-4+ mbps on the 5.1 sound. They were also mastered to BD50 discs with only a couple trailers for special features to allow space for their generous compression rates. No troublesome DNR or sharpening is present which is crucial for this film since there are many scenes with insane contrast and many night scenes(think snowscapes of blinding white and barren, unlit state highways with snow-covered towns and pockets of neon lit businesses as the only nighttime light sources) which benefit from a grain field being left intact. Not once do you see blocking or shadow aberrations in pitch black winter night scenes like you will when streaming this particular master on any online service. Details in hair and clothing, facial textures and effects like stubble on Stromares character and blood and cuts to Buscemis face, snow covered ground and car metals and upholestery textures all have natural filmic looks and enough detail to feel immersed. Sound is well presented in its native 5.1 dts master, with great separation. There is clear and present dialogue (a Coen brothers film focus) and well mixed foley from feet crunching snow to gunshots and the infamous wood chipper scene which plays sound to comedic effect. Until shout release their 4k, this is a great buy for one of the Coen Brothers best films, a picture I personally put on a very short list of what I consider holistically "perfect " films.

An amazingly well made movie, although there perhaps is too much cursing. If you can look beyond that, and if you decide to watch it, you will be enjoying an incomparably beautiful movie. The only other movie I can think of that can be considered as great as this one would be the unforgettable Godfather. And, as in Godfather, the acting on everybody's part was superb. Give this movie a watch; you might enjoy it as much as I did. "There is more to life than a little money, you know? Don't you know that? And, here you are. And it's a beautiful day... I just don't understand it." Marge Gunderson

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly original black comedy with great cast
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 10, 2024
It’s hard to believe that 25 years have passed since Fargo first appeared, fully establishing the Coen Brothers as innovative filmmakers coming on the heels of Blood Simple and Raising Arizona. Having seen the movie several times, it continues to be a fresh, hilarious 98 minutes of black comedy – a perfect combination of memorable characters brought together in a story with its relatively little dialogue frequently punctuated with “you betcha’s” and “yaa’s”. The performances are superb, topped by Frances McDormand’s Oscar winning role as the pregnant police chief, Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare as the inept kidnappers and William H. Macy as the car salesman whose life builds one problem on top of another, but the whole cast blend perfectly together to create a highly entertaining, sometimes brutal, tale.

The film also succeeds visually, with the bleak, snow covered North Dakota landscape perfectly photographed, with this BluRay presentation capturing its sharp, bright images. For anyone enjoying quirky tales start here, though it's hard to imagine that there are still those unaware of Coen Brothers’ movies.
